How Our Custom Projects Work

The Window Covering Specialist provides consultation, measuring, specification, procurement, project coordination, and installation for custom window treatments, including draperies, shades, Roman shades, hardware, and motorized window-treatment systems.

Unlike ready-made retail products, many of our products are custom-made or specially ordered for each individual project. Materials and fabrication are therefore generally not ordered until the customer has approved the project and the required deposit has been received.

1. Consultation, Measuring & Specifications

We consult with the customer, designer, builder, architect, AV professional, or other project representatives as applicable.

Project requirements may include field measurements, product selections, fabrics, hardware, motorization, controls, installation conditions, and other specifications.

2. Proposal & Customer Approval

The customer receives a written proposal, estimate, invoice, or project agreement describing the applicable products and services, pricing, and payment requirements.

The customer reviews and approves the project before custom materials are ordered or fabrication begins.

3. Deposit

Depending on the products, scope, and requirements of the project, an initial payment or deposit of up to 100% may be required before materials are ordered, fabrication begins, or project-specific costs are incurred. The required amount will be clearly disclosed in the customer's proposal, invoice, or project agreement before payment is authorized. 

Deposits allow us to commit project resources and pay costs associated with materials, custom fabrication, hardware, motorization components, workroom production, and other project-specific expenses.

We do not require customers to pay for a completed product before receiving any information about what they are purchasing. Project specifications, pricing, and applicable payment terms are provided for customer approval before payment is authorized.

4. Custom Fabrication & Procurement

After the required approval and deposit are received, materials may be ordered and custom fabrication or procurement may begin.

Depending on the project, products may be fabricated or supplied by specialized workrooms, manufacturers, suppliers, and other trade professionals coordinated by The Window Covering Specialist.

Because many products are manufactured specifically for an individual customer's measurements and specifications, they may have little or no resale value to another customer.

5. Milestone Payments

Larger projects may be divided into milestone payments rather than processed as a single transaction.

The applicable payment schedule is disclosed in the customer's proposal, invoice, or project agreement.

Depending on the project, milestones may correspond to procurement, fabrication, completion of particular portions of the project, delivery, installation, or other agreed project stages.

6. Lead Times

Custom-project lead times vary depending on product type, material availability, fabrication schedules, manufacturers, shipping, motorization components, project complexity, and installation requirements.

Customers are informed of anticipated lead times when reasonably available. Because custom products involve third-party manufacturing, fabrication, and shipping, completion and installation dates are estimates unless expressly guaranteed in writing.

7. Delivery & Installation

When applicable, completed products are delivered or installed at the project location.

Installation is scheduled based on product readiness, site readiness, installer availability, and satisfaction of applicable payment requirements.

8. Final Payment

Any remaining balance is due according to the payment schedule stated in the customer's proposal, invoice, or project agreement.

Depending on the project, final payment may be due before installation, at installation, upon substantial completion, or at another specifically agreed milestone.

9. Cancellations & Refunds

Because our projects frequently involve custom-made and specially ordered products, cancellation and refund eligibility depends on the stage of the project and whether materials, fabrication, or other non-recoverable project costs have already been committed.
